I mentioned in my previous post that I have a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. So here’s my journal to remind me of the goodness of Jesus, his sovereignty and healing power.
Last August 2, 2018, I felt the numbness in my left index finger. I ignored it at first but after 2-3 days the discomfort and tingling progressed through my entire hand and wrist. My Kuya, Gege &Rhea (all nurses) told me to consult a doctor immediately but for the meantime, take Vitamin B and pain reliever. I was hesitant to have it checked because I thought it will just go away but on Sunday evening, I dropped the plate I’m washing. 😐
The next week, It got worse since it’s very cold in the office. I couldn’t use my left hand anymore to type on my keyboard. The pain eventually reached my arms and neck so I finally decided to go to the hospital. My doctor did initial testing and then recommended an EMG test before confirming his diagnosis. It was indicated in my endorsement letter that its a possible CTS. 🙁
While waiting for my scheduled EMG, I was allowed to work from home. Praise God because I didn’t file a week-long sick leave.
In my quiet times, God has spoken to me in Proverbs 2:3 Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. This is a gentle rebuke for me, because I was so stubborn. I should went to the hospital for an earlier checkup instead of waiting for a week. I also realized that it was all my fault because I overused my hands. When I’m working or playing, I don’t rest until I finish my task.
Then on August 12, the pain in my right hand also manifested. 🙁 I was worried but thankfully I got a good news that my EMG test was moved to an earlier schedule because someone cancelled their appointment. Thank you Lord!
By August 14, I finally had my official diagnosis: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and based from the result, I had it in my both hands. 🙁
I was advised to have a surgery but I opt to undergo physical therapy first.
As my heart deceived me and question why this happened, I hold on to Genesis 45:50 “You intended to harm me but God intended it all for good.”. and Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.“. With His words, I fully surrendered everything to him and follow his ways.
Thankfully my condition improved after the first 6 PT sessions. In parallel, I perform at home the different exercises I learned from my therapists to prevent it from recurring. Also, we have our own TENS unit ( transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) so it really helped me to get well. I went back to office but continued 6 more sessions when I complained the tension in my neck persists.
After 2 months, my Doctor finally cleared me from the treatment. The only guidance he gave was to wear my splints at night (no longer 24/7) and take vitamins. Yey no surgery!!!
As of this writing, I feel better. However, when I play instruments I feel minor pains and I realize that my playing wasn’t the same as before. Even when I write, or simply carry light loads, I now need to rest from time to time. Also, last Christmas season (because it was cold), I had to put hot compress and do the hand exercises regularly to alleviate the discomfort.
Detailed Praise Items:
- God’s comfort through his words. 🙂
- All consultations, lab tests and therapy sessions are covered by HMO
- Had very intentional, patient and kind doctors, nurses and therapists
- I was accompanied by mama during my lab tests/checkups and my whole family took care of me at home.
- There are many people praying for me
- I was diagnosed during early stages.
- The pain started in my left hand even though I’m right handed. This enabled me to use my strong hand while working.
- Provisions to buy medicines, buy wrist splints (which are quite expensive)
- Provisions for our transportation going back and forth the hospital
- I was allowed to work from home during my check up and PT sessions.
In this journey, I have nothing but all thanks to Jesus my Lord. It seems ironic that the hands I used to work, to play music and to blog are now limited but I trust and have faith in God for it is part of His perfect plan for me. I’m now more motivated to praise and glorify God using these precious hands. 🙂
That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
